When someone asks you what you do for a living, how do you lead? I’d venture to guess that most of us just give our job titles. Where we work. Who we work for.

I suggest a new approach. Let’s talk about roles.

Talk to people about the meaningful aspects of your daily duties.

Here’s an example.

Instead of leading with “I’m a Cyber Risk Analyst at HORNE Cyber,” I could say “I help private and public businesses analyze their cybersecurity risks and needs and work with them to meet both.”

It’s less about my job title and more about helping people to feel the role that I provide to others. I’m more concerned with helping business owners sleep soundly at night knowing that they are in the best of hands, less interested in trying to be flashy with meaningless titles.

So – what’s your role?
